Public Service Blogcast Episode 60

One of Northern Ireland's hottest properties are Belfast's The Jane Bradfords whose number while alternating between being as large as a seven piece and as small as just one guy in a studio (cursing at old keyboards that used to work perfectly well) averages out at 5. Their fusion of the nonchalant swagger of The National, the driving tight Peter Hook style bass and at times the euphoric hosannas of Arcade Fire has won plaudits from Huw Stephens and the readership of Alternative Ulster magazine who voted their 2008 debut album into the list of 50 best records of the 2000s. Look out for a new album from TJB in 2010, exclusive previews of which can be heard on this blogcast.

Public Service Blogcast Episode 59

Cutaways use two boys, one girl, two synths, one guitar, a drum kit and bags full of hooks and melodies to make their jagged and boisterous pop music. 2009 saw the NME hailing the Belfast trio as "your new favourite band" and Ireland's Hot Press and AU magazines both name Cutaways as one of the bands to watch. In March the band made their first TV appearance on ITV1’s 'Live at The Limelight' while the summer saw them play a number of key festivals including headlining Belfast Pride and also taking in Indie Week Ireland, Glasgowbury and Feile Festival.

Paul, Grace and Ryan take a break from recording album #2 - lierally as you will hear - to takeover this blogcast. Belfast residents take note of the Cutaways Xmas Party! Xposure @ Auntie Annies on December 16th!

Public Service Blogcast Episode 54

This episode is a takeover from the mysterious and sickeningly inventive Lemonade Kangeroo, one of the best new electronic musicians unearthed in the blogcast series. In his own words - A kangaroo jumping up and down on a Midi Keyboard (actually USB), while kicking a computer stuffed with samples and, on the track Rowan, Tim (who I hope doesn't mind me using just his first name - it could be considered a bit forward as we haven't actually met) who has allowed me to use one of his amazing (bit brown nosey so far? am trying not to) poems in one of my mediocre songs! You may have seen Tim on the TV in Charlie Brooker's Screen/Newswipe or in Cowards - a BBC sketch show that was also a Radio 4 series (which I still haven't heard)

Public Service Blogcast Episode 51

From Let Our Enemies Beware:

This is our blogcast. Don't listen to it.

Seriously DON'T.

LOEB would like to thank Vicious Biting Thing for his dedication to THE CAUSE.

At one point we have paraphrased a quote from the Armando Iannucci Show without permssion. We would like to make it clear that we are huge fans of the work of Armand Iannucci and that of Alan Ford. Whilst we do have the utmost respect for them, we were compelled to hear their work through a threatening Stephen Hawkins-esque voice-box named 'Fred'. Please don't sue us or we will come round and batter the chins from your living skulls.

The musical event of the Bank Holiday weekend is of course This Ain't No Picnic Derry - 10 acts including The Dangerfields, Panama Kings, LaFaro, Black Bear Saloon and - with offers of suitcases of Mean Fiddler money falling on deaf ears - now headlined by what I'm going to call Fighting With Ferris as Andrew Ferris takes to the stage with Fighting With Wire for a full live set of Jetplane Landing classics and over-ambitious covers for just £8 at St Columb's Hall. Andrew and Fighting With Wire's Cahir O'Doherty took time out from the TANP'D propaganda whirlwind of interviews and PR to showcase some of the bands playing on Saturday and also rocking the STA office with 2 exclusive acoustic Backlash Cop favourites.

They have been described as "a head-on collision between The Cure and Fugazi" and the must-read Devil Has The Best Tuna blog praised their song Highgate Owl Nightmare for "cramming an album's worth of ideas into nearly four minutes of wild and wonderful alt-rock". And here on the STA blogcast you can hear what all the hoo-haa is about from the band themselves as they present three of their own tracks along with other favourites and influences.
