The Last Ever 4 or 5 Magicians Rock Concert, Friday April 1st @ Brixton Windmill
In October 2005, The Freebutt in Brighton saw the first show of 4 or 5 Magicians, a band I started with some friends from university. Almost exactly 5 years on in October 2010, 190 shows, 23 members, 3 record labels, 2 Lamacq singles of the week, and 1 critically acclaimed album down the line I decided to call and end to the band in a van somewhere between Nottingham and Birmingham.
Following the announcment that 4 or 5 Magicians were to disappear, many people contacted me requesting I organise one final show for the band, and after some umming and ahhing I have decided to do just this, on my birthday Friday April 1st, at our most played and most loved venue, The Windmill in Brixton.
The 2009 album tour lineup of myself, Sam Clarke, Ivan Berry and Alex Wilkinson will play the bulk of the set which will feature every track from our album 'Empty, Derivative Pop Songs'. There will also be a special short section of golden oldies performed by the first proper lineup of the band, that of Myself, Matt Hayward, Jon Wood and Alex Lovell. Other past members will also be in attendance and making cameo appearances!
Doors will be at 7pm, three excellent support bands will be announced in due course starting at 7:30pm. 4 or 5 Magicians will hit the stage at 10pm. DJs will follow into the early hours and we will all stay and dance a lot because it is my birthday.
Entry will be £5 in advance (ticket link to follow shortly), and we will also be selling copies of our 9/10 rated album 'Empty, Derivative Pop Songs' for the knock down price of £5 as well as some other stuff we have left including the last few copies of the Forever On The Edge and Nice Little Earner singles, the CD-R demo 'Wakey Wakey Everyone' and our last few T-Shirts. So remember to bring your pocket money!
The show will act as a fundraiser for the recording costs of my new project. It is currently unnamed and unmanned, but I have ten new songs almost ready to record properly which I am very excited about.
Thanks to everyone for your support over the past five years, let's make this last show the best one ever!

There's Nothing Wrong With Covers III, Sat 18th Dec, Brixton
On Saturday 18th December 2010 at The Windmill in Brixton, the night that celebrates the best of classic 80s/90s and modern undergound British indie rock 'There's Nothing Wrong With Covers' returns for a third installment with a mixture of past favourites and exciting new acts.
BANANIRVANA as Nirvana - 10:00pm to 11:00pm
Following on from August's rapturously received recreation of Nirvana's much lauded Reading 1992 performance featuring a guitarist, a bass player, a drummer, and an array of different Kurts on vocals (including a female Kurt, a Newcastle Brown Ale necking Chinese Kurt, and even a harmonising Kurt duo), Bananirvana are back with their unique live Nirvana karaoke act performing classic album 'In Utero' in full plus an encore (well, you know, if the crowd want it) of selected other hits. Get in touch if you fancy being a Kurt on the night - all we ask is you learn the words properly and can sing a bit!
SPECIAL GUESTS TBC - 9:00pm to 9:45pm
Excellent band perfoming as excellent band to be announced in due course!
BAND OF PRICKS as Guided By Voices - 7:45pm to 8:45pm
The greatest band from Dayton, Ohio (perhaps, even, the whole of the world) of all time Guided By Voices recently reformed with the classic lineup from their most critically acclaimed period of existence - 1990 to 1996. It remains to be seen whether they will be coming to the UK or just reserving this reunion for American ears. Fingers crossed they make it over, but either way, GBV tribute act, the pun-derfully monikored Band Of Pricks, who at past shows have been likened in terms of energy, enthusiasm, and downright rock and rollability to GBV at their peak, are back with a 25ish song set of material from the 1990 to 1996 period. The set will feature songs from all albums during the period, as well as a variety of EPs and rarities, and some songs GBV have never even performed live themselves.
KANNBERG 1664 as Pavement - 7:00pm to 7:30pm
Everyone into indie rock is a Pavement fan, right? Well Alexei from Johnny Foreigner, Craig from Internet Forever, Aaron from Eelectricity and Lust, and Dan from 4 or 5 Magicians are no exceptions, and they got together to play a Pavement tribute night in May, where they were described by more than one member of the assembled (and possibly slightly drunk) crowd as "actually better than Pavement". It seemed like a perfect opportunity to reform for a Reading 1992 retrospective show in August with a set of early hits, and as both were so fun and so well received they are returning for a third time here with another almost totally different set of slacker rock classics for all you indie rock fans!
EELECTRICITY & LUST as REM - 6:15pm to 6:45pm
Eelectricity & Lust have been rapidly gaining plaudits and a loyal following in London over the past year. Local lads from Brixton, they mix elements of the great American indie rock bands of yesteryear with classic and modern British punk rock influences. Perhaps most important of all to them are the REM of the 1980s, who (and it has perhaps been largely forgotten these days) were a huge influence on such indie heroes as Sonic Youth and The Replacements, not to mention Nirvana, Pavement, and Guided By Voices! E&L will be performing a split set between their own highly promising material and that of REM.
RAYMOND DETRITUS presents Christmas with Raymond - 5:30pm to 6:00pm
When not doing his best Krist Novoselic impression in Bananirvana, Jon Wood works on his irreverent project Raymond Detritus, the self proclaimed "singer-songwriter that can't sing or write songs". Sometimes he plays an 8 string baritone guitar in a four piece band, sometimes there are just three of them, sometimes it is just him and a friend, sometimes it is just him playing a ukulele on his own. Who knows what he is gonna do here, but I am under the impression he will be performing some of his self penned songs about Christmas (as featured on his 'Christmas with Raymond' EP), and maybe even a rendition of 'Jingle Bells' or 'Away In A Manger'.
Doors at 5:00pm : £5 advance, £6 on the door : DJs playing indie rock hits (and perhaps a few Christmas classics) until late. Tickets on sale now.

1992: The Year Reading Peaked - Tickets On Sale
Tickets for Dan 4 Or 5's unique August Bank Holiday all-dayer are now on sale for just £5. And that's not all - Dan has also gone back in time to 1992 to create a poster using the finest home computing technology of the day.
In late August 1992, on a rainy Sunday evening on a farm in Berkshire, UK, Kurt Cobain was pushed out on a big stage in a wheelchair - an ironic riposte to his widely reported health problems - to perform what must surely be the greatest ever performance at the Reading Festival.
Halfway across the globe in Japan, on the preceeding Friday, what was, and almost certainly still is, the best multiplayer video game of all time - Super Mario Kart - was released.
And so, on Saturday 28th August 2010, we bring these two momentous occasions together in one room, 18 years on, for a celebration of how it used to be.

4 Or 5 Magicians: Recreating Reading Festival 1992 & October Tour
OK finally some constructive news!
I'm booking a tour for the new look 4 or 5 Magicians and our friends from Birmingham, the wonderful Ace Bushy Striptease. We're heading out together for 8 days from Friday 15th to Saturday 23rd October.
If you are a promoter reading this and would like to put us on, or if you are a fan reading this who wants us to visit your town, and would like to suggest us contacting a promoter or venue who was likely to put us on, then please get in touch.
Sadly, this tour will take place without James, who had recently joined on drums, as he has decided to leave the band. Nothing sinister, it just wasn't working out for him logistically and he decided to back out before we got properly going again. In his own words he still loves the songs, and he is actually helping me out in finding a permanent replacement! Until this happens (probably until 2011), the drum stool at live shows will be occupied by the highly capable swinging arms of Brighton drumming master and all round top bloke Rob Ling, who plays in our Brighton contemporaries Grow Claws, and has also performed in a session capacity for bands such as The Joy Formidable, Wildbirds and Peacedrums, and Nick McCabe from The Verve. So he knows what he's doing!
Before the tour, we have the next in line of my wonderful cover nights, which will definitely be the most ambitious (if "ambitious cover night" isn't an oxymoron) yet, once again at The Windmill in Brixton.

I figured there must be plenty of other people in my position too, kinda demoralised by the commercialism of the festival these days, and the hefty ticket price. So I decided I would attempt, on the same weekend, to put on my own tribute to the Reading festival, and recreate the best of the bill from the classic year of 1992, remembered chiefly for THAT Nirvana peformance, but also including early performances by bands that would go on to become major players and/or hugely influential in the 90s and beyond, such as PJ Harvey, Smashing Pumpkins, Pavement, Manic Street Preachers, Suede, Beastie Boys... oh and Bjorn Again played as well!
8 or 9 bands will come along and blast out some classics of yesteryear, and some classics of their own, and of course there is the famous free BBQ - we will not charge you £7.50 for a burger here!
Already confirmed are 4 or 5 Magicians as Manic Street Preachers (happy to fulfil NME's labelling of us as "the new Manic Street Preachers" by attempting to be the old Manic Street Preachers for one night only!), Amy Blue as Smashing Pumpkins, and Kannberg 1664 - a supergroup featuring Alexei from Johnny Foreigner, Craig from Internet Forever, Aaron from Eelectricity and Lust, and myself. We'll be performing a 10 song Pavement set of early hits. Other offers and exciting TBCs are out there and will shortly be confirmed!
As headliner I am attempting something which I very much hope will be the best thing ever. Sam Clarke is growing some stubble, donning a blonde wig, and busting out some of Kurt's finest guitar, and I am straightening my hair, getting down the gym, and brushing up on my Dave Grohl drumming action. We will be performing an hour long, 20 song set made up of the choice selections from Nirvana's classic set.
And then YOU will be the singer. The chance you have always been waiting for of being Kurt Cobain! I am planning on each song having a different Kurt, and while I already have a few semi-famous indie singers confirmed for guest slots on the microphone, I also want to open it up to members of the record buying public too. So if you are interested in having a go at being Kurt, then please get in touch and we can get you involved! All I ask is, i) that you can actually sing a bit, ii) that you promise to learn the words to and the structure of your song properly, and iii) that you can bring a few mates along to witness your finest hour! Open to boys and girls. But if you're a girl you got to sing it hard. Or if you're a boy for that matter. Anyway yeah, get in touch!

Pavement Tribute Night Planned By 4 Or 5 Magicians
With this May being renamed 'the month that Pavement came back' (Pavementuary?), news of a 4 Or 5 Magicians-curated tribute night courtesy Sweeping The Nation: We gather Dan Ormsby, increasingly 'and your granny on bongos'-like frontman of 4 Or 5 Magicians, is planning to follow up last year's Our Band Could Be Your Life tribute weekender at the Brixton Windmill with a Pavement covers/tribute night on May 10th, with Ace Bushy Striptease and The Muscle Club involved. Those probably won't be the last of them either.

4 Or 5 Magicians: Final Show (of sorts) on April 1st in London (not a joke!)
Ok so as previously reported, Alex and Sam are leaving the band, and we are recruiting a new drummer and guitarist.
However, we will be playing one final show with the lineup we have had for the past year or so of Dan - Sam - Ivan - Alex (and probably Graham for a couple of songs too). This will take place on THURSDAY APRIL 1st (which is my birthday!) at The Windmill in Brixton. We will be playing our album 'Empty, Derivative Pop Songs' in full, in order. This will be the last ever opportunity for you to hear a few of the songs from the album played live, and the ones we do keep on we will not be playing regularly, as we are effectively relaunching as a new band in May (though for various reasons, after a lot of thought, I am keeping the name '4 or 5 Magicians' on) so make sure you come down if you are a fan of the band as this will definitely be the last opportunity to see 4 or 5 Magicians as you know them (us? them?). I know I said this at Christmas, but as we only managed to play about five of our own songs then, I felt we had to do one more show! Support comes from our touring buddies The Muscle Club, playing their first show of the 2010, and two more super duper bands that are yet to confirm but I'm sure will shortly. Entry is £4 on the door, but alternatively you could pay £8 on the door, and gain entry to the show as well as receiving a copy of our album! Doors are at 7:30pm, we're on at 10:00pm. DJs spinning ultimate party choons until the landlord kicks us out!
On the new members front, fingers crossed, we appear to have found a new drummer already. Me and Ivan are meeting up with him next week, and if an initial rehearsal goes well, then we have ourselves a perfect replacement. The third annual 4 or 5 Magicians Christmas party at The Windmill in Brixton!
This year, the theme is Secret Santa, and every band will be covering at least one song by one of the other bands on the night!
I organised a show on our November tour at The Flowerpot in Camden, and it was so good (as I’m sure anyone who was there would agree!) that I have picked the same lineup (+1 more) for this show.

The irreverent lofi musings of Jon Wood, the self styled ‘singer songwriter who can’t sing or write songs’. With backing band including members of Internet Forever and Tellison.

4 Or 5 Magicians' BBQ Could Be Your Weekend
This weekend sees the 4 Or 5 Magicians curated weekender in honour of Michael Azzerad's biography of the 13 pioneers of the American alt-rock scene, Our Band Could Be Your Life which you are strongly recommended to attend - great music, great burgers, scary dog on the roof all a few minutes walk up the hill from Brixton tube. Over to Dan Ormsby...
In my most bold gig organising venture to date, I have arranged a wonderful weekend of music, both regressive and original at the same time - a bit like Back To The Future I suppose, just with bands more punk rock than Huey Lewis and The News.
I've done a couple of more general nights at The Windmill in the past under the name 'There's Nothing Wrong With Covers' where I've picked some awesome bands we've had the privelege to watch, meet, play with, or all three, around the country, where they came and did a split set between their own songs, and the songs of a classic alt-rock band. After the last one, an attendee suggested basing the next night around Michael Azzerad's biography of the 13 pioneers of the American alt-rock scene, Our Band Could Be Your Life, surely one of the best music books in existence. As it contained at least 10 of my favourite bands of all time (and 13 I admire, and highly respect), I pounced on the idea.
I set about doing it in early spring, and finally, a few weeks ago, I formed a finalised lineup of 13 of the best alternative bands in the UK to take part. With the best punk rock venue in London, The Windmill in Brixton on board, and the promise of a free-for-all BBQ on both days, this can only be all kinds of win.
There are still a few advance tickets available (links below) I advise either buying in advance (there will be a slight markup on the door), or getting down early to avoid disappointment, as there has been a lot of interest in this event, and The Windmill is only small!
